The Sofa Mission, max "Adrenalina"

The adventure of a group of Cavazza Institute students, from Bologna to Pesaro and back
Marco Ferrigno

There are exploits that become history: the moon landing, the discovery of America, the construction of the pyramids… And then there’s ours: a train ride from Bologna to Pesaro to visit Adrenalina, the temple of design sofas, a place with such elegant products that we wondered if they had an alarm system for anyone who might touch an armrest too hard.

The trip (here we go): we met at the station, full of enthusiasm, ready to roll. Everyone except Mariano, who decided it was World Unpaired Socks Day. “I did it on purpose,” he assured us, although we all knew that the black hole of the washing machine had struck again.

Arrival (out of the way, here come the Barbarians!):

We got to Pesaro, and the sea air made us all giddy. Juliet, our black Labrador, chose to honor the free spirit of nearby Romagna by taking a wild run through the fields. Then (perhaps inspired by a documentary on thermal mud) she decided to dive right into every puddle she saw, transforming herself into a monochromatic work of art somewhere between brown and grey. And when you’re completely encrusted in mud, what could be better than plopping down on a white sofa costing thousands of euros??

Silence. Panic. Palpitation.

Valentina, our spiritual guide at Adrenalina, looked at us as if she were reconsidering all of her life choices, while, brush in hand, she recited a mantra with all of grandma’s methods to remove stains. We thought about running away, but we froze when someone shouted “if we do any more damage, Principal Lucia will make sure we’ll regret it forever!”

The visit (beauty and rapture).

For some, the tour was a mystical experience: incredible shapes, elegant fabrics, bright colors. And we? We were like Totò in Milan! Antonio, a former carpenter, had a mystical crisis and began caressing any nearby piece of wood, talking all about hammer, saws, and nails. On the other hand, Gennaro demonstrated his skills during the reception: pockets full of brioches, hands continuously at work among the pastries, mouth operating non-stop. No one saw him without food for the next 4 hours. Adrenalina makes stuffed sofas; he got stuffed all by himself. Meanwhile, Camilla and Giovanni attempted to maintain a minimum of dignity, while the rest of us, acting nonchalant, wondered who these strangers were.

The return (trains and existential thoughts):

So, we survived. We gave our sincere thanks to Valentina and the entire staff of Adrenalina, who had the patience to receive us and not call security. Later, after eating an incredibly good piadina, tired but happy, we took the train back to Bologna. Gennaro still had something to munch on, Mariano swore he would check his socks better the next time, and Juliet, satisfied with her performance, fell asleep next to us, dreaming about new puddles to conquer.

If design is art, we were the perfect opposite: pure chaos in a world of beauty.

And what did we leave at Adrenalina? A Labrador paw print, “deluxe mud” model, on the white sofa!
