The modern home

Living better with technology
Marino Attini

Domotics is a science created in the late 20th century, reserved to a few elite who could afford to make their home automated at an exorbitant price. But recent business developments have made costs drop, so that everyone can now take advantage of these devices at much more affordable costs and, especially, without specialized technical installation. On the other hand, many devices (due to their design or production costs) have replaced the usual dials with elegant touch screens which, in many cases, are unusable by people with visual impairments.

Therefore, INVAT (the Italian National Institute for Aids and Technology Assessment), in constant contact with industry, monitors and analyzes all of the devices critical for our daily life, inside and outside the home, as well as all devices that inhibit access to operating systems and to the Web. Based on these experiences and on their professional expertise, Marino Attini and Rocco Clementelli collected important suggestions and advice on how to achieve maximum independence and comfort in daily activities at home (such as listening to music, reading a book, making the most of the kitchen, knowing we’re safe at home and when outside, optimizing electrical consumption, etc., and all of the comforts that our home provides), all told in a reader-friendly, non-technical way by Sergio Prelato, writer and novelist, who has placed technical considerations in familiar contexts (such as famous films). As a result, the book is a good read for everyone, offering innovative suggestions and ideas for effective use of means of communication, as well as for simple uses such as voice commands to control electrical appliances, heat our home, or listen to music. So, without any special structural works or changes to the electrical system, we can overcome the architectural and technological barriers created by designers who have forgotten about the blind and visually impaired. The technologies described in this book are becoming more and more available and can really help us, and luckily for us, all large-scale companies are moving in this direction. Now that we have piqued your curiosity, we invite you to read this book, published by UICI (The Italian Union of the Blind and Partially Sighted) and INVAT, and made available free of charge on the UICI website (www.uiciechi.it) in a variety of formats (from accessible PDF to Epub) to satisfy all users. You can also order a hard copy from local UICI branches. Have a good read!
