The work the Francesco Cavazza Institute has always carried out in the field of education, rehabilitation and integration of visually impaired children was significantly recognized in 2018. In fact, the Institute's educational counselling service is now part of the diagnostic and healthcare treatment pathways of Bologna's Local Public Health Service.

Diagnostic and healthcare treatment pathways, or complex interventions, aimed at specific groups of patients are based on the best scientific evidence and characterized by the implementation of impactful and standardized activities by a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals. “For many years now, diagnostic and healthcare treatment pathways are used to improve treatment quality and effectiveness," explains Dr. Elisa Gaparrini, healthcare professional at Bologna's Maggiore Hospital. The diagnostic and healthcare treatment pathways provide patients with proper and equal access to treatment of their specific pathologies. This technical-management tool, whose standard is still under development, is necessary to guarantee reproducibility of actions, performance standards, information exchange and understanding of roles while allowing constant adaptation to specific situations and constant monitoring of updates and improvements."

"Diagnostic and healthcare treatment pathways carried out by the Istituto Cavazza," continues Dr. Gasparrini, "are very focused and aimed at children until the age of 14 who live with severe rare eye diseases such as retinopathy of prematurity, congenital cataracts, congenital glaucoma, corneal diseases and rare vitreoretinal diseases as well as congenital ophthalmological abnormalities, and syndromes involving ocular diseases."
