The Intelligent ATM
An innovative automatic teller machine accessible to blind persons was inaugurated in Bologna. Adapted with a "voice" and a keyboard "readable" to the touch, clients can carry out, what is considered for most, simple bank operations.

An innovative automatic
teller machine available for blind persons' use.
We must draw attention
to a newsworthy innovation in the field of technology for blind and
visually impaired persons, which will undoubtedly increase their quality of
life. The technological innovation
is a common
initiative between three bank institutions in Bologna: Credibo – Credito
Cooperativo Bolognese, Emilbanca – Banca di Credito Cooperativo and Banca
di Credito Cooperativo di Castenaso.
The automatic teller machine is
adjusted to respond to the particular requirements of clients with a visual
impairment. It is adapted with a keyboard with raised pulsating dots, which
activate a vocal help service guiding clients with bank
operations such as direct debit or balance interrogation.
The ATM is otherwise similar to the ones we are familiar with and
is, in fact, usable by everyone.
The new ATM is located on Venezian
Avenue at the corner of Ugo Bassi Avenue and serves clients in the historical
centre. The praiseworthy initiave is being extended to other banking
institutions.
In order to better serve clients for whom the ATM
was specially intended, the Istituto Francesco Cavazza has prepared a guide
in braille. The Italian Blind Union has had the task to evaluate the
accessibility features designed for persons with a visual
impairment.
